Course Benefits
Are you wondering what you will get out of taking a course in the Orthopaedic System? Keep reading!
- Manual Skills: Learn new manual therapy techniques – both joint mobilization and manipulation - and improve your existing techniques so that you can help your patients with injuries from head to toe. Through these techniques you will be better able to more effectively treat movement restrictions, reduce pain and improve function in a safe and efficient manner.
- Multi-Modal Approach: It’s not all about joint mobilizations and manipulations! Orthopaedic therapists treat using a multi-modal approach and on our courses, you will learn manual and other techniques to address soft tissue dysfunction, exercises to complement your manual therapy and how to educate your patient to maximise treatment outcomes.
- Clinical Reasoning: Evidence-informed clinical reasoning is a major focus of the orthopaedic education system. On our courses, you will review clinically relevant anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, clinical assessment skills, and differential diagnosis. Further, treatment indications/contraindications, informed consent, patient and clinician safety, outcome measures and prognosis development will be reviewed with the aim of developing better decision-making skills for your patient populations in numerous clinical situations.
- Complementary Therapy: Speaking of other populations, the practical skills you learn on our orthopaedic courses will help you treat patients outside of more typical neuromusculoskeletal issues. These skills will complement your existing techniques in the rehabilitation of a variety of patients including those with pelvic health dysfunctions, post-cancer treatment side-effects, neurological conditions, vestibular conditions and complex pain syndromes. They will also work well with your acupuncture and dry needling techniques and with other treatment methods such as ART, McKenzie and Mulligan.
- Comprehensiveness: While the orthopaedic level system courses represent a bigger time commitment than some other courses, you will learn countless clinical pearls and techniques each weekend that can be applied at work on Monday morning. What's more, you will have the opportunity to have these techniques reviewed by experienced manual physiotherapists in subsequent weekends after you have had a chance to practice on your patients to fine tune your technique application. The format of the course is designed into upper and lower quadrants as opposed to focusing on one small area at a time to ensure an integrative approach to your learning by emphasizing relationships between different body parts and dysfunctions. The aim is to better appreciate the entire clinical presentation so that you can treat your patients more effectively and efficiently.
- Value for Money: While the fees associated with one orthopaedic course might appear high at first glance, they are actually one of the most cost-effective courses out there. For an Orthopaedic Division member, the cost of a Level II course works out to only $115 per day. Considering the breadth and depth of our courses, this is truly great value for your money.
- Quality: One of the biggest benefits of taking one of our courses is learning from our experienced and dynamic instructors. Read more about the instructors you will be learning from here.
- Accredited: Our courses are accredited by IFOMPT, the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physiotherapists, ensuring high standards in our syllabus, instructors and examination process. The standardized evaluations within the system are a way to demonstrate your efforts in meaningful improvement in your knowledge and skill set. As well, by following the orthopaedic system to its highest level and passing the Advanced Practical Examination, you are eligible to become a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy, a qualification which signifies to your colleagues and patients your level of advanced training, expertise, leadership and dedication.
